DR. SISSY SARTOR: So the main steps involved with IVF are primarily four steps. The first is where the patient is stimulated or superovulated so that she will mature multiple eggs at one time. The second step is called retrieval and involves an ultrasound-guided transvaginal aspiration of the eggs. The third step is really everything that occurs in the laboratory, from preparation of the sperm to mixing of the sperm and egg together or to doing intracytoplasmic injection of sperm.
The fourth step is the transfer of the resulting embryos back to the uterine cavity of the female, of the wife. The entire process takes approximately three weeks to complete, from initiation of the beginning stimulatory medications all the way to embryo transfer.
Depending on when the embryos are transferred back to the uterine cavity, the pregnancy test is then done seven to nine days after the embryo transfer.
