NOW PLAYING: Tubal Ligation Reversal

DR. STEVEN TAYLOR: Tubal ligation reversal is a procedure that can benefit those patients who are interested in pregnancy and of course have had a previous tubal ligation. Not all tubal ligations or tubal sterilizations are easily reversible. The best candidates for tubal ligation reversal are those that have had true tying of the tubes or have had rubber bands or clips applied to the tubes. Those patients that have had the tubes burned generally are not wonderful candidates for this procedure as the amount of damage to the tube can be rather extensive.

Tubal ligation reversal is a procedure that is highly effective with success rates approaching 80% for most patients. Tubal ligation reversal has been done for now about 30 years having first been done in Europe in 1978. The first tubal ligation reversal done in the southern United States was one that I did at Tulane University in 1979. This procedure generally involves one day in the hospital, a short recovery period thereafter, and patients can start trying for pregnancy several weeks after the surgery.
